History > RITUAL CACAO
Dark chocolate was used as a health drink by the Mayans, Aztecs and other ancient civilizations in Mexico, Central and South America. They revered their cacao for royal and religious purposes. It was considered a remedy against fatigue and cool fevers. It was also given to soldiers during battle.
The Aztecs called it 'The food of the gods'.
Making the cacao drink was a very complex ritual (from the extraction, roasting process, reduction into powder and cooking until the mixture became foamy).
The Aztec ruler Montezuma was said to have drunk fifty cups of chocolate every day from golden goblets.
In time, cacao became so highly regarded in the Aztec society that the bean itself was used as money.
