It has been rumored that Christopher Columbus was going to bring dark chocolate to Europe but had mistaken the cocoa beans for goat excrement and discarded them.
Dark chocolate's introduction to Europe had to wait until the 16th century.
It was probably first given to the Spanish invaders after Don Hernán Cortés arrived on the Yucatán Peninsula in 1519.
